Regarding Broody Hens and Abandoned Eggs

It's spring down here in Australia and I seem to have a rotating roster of broody hens. While frustrating, I finally decided to take advantage and throw some fertile eggs under a couple of them.

My SLW is happily sitting on 12 eggs with plenty of coverage. She's on day 10 and is sitting strong. Only gets off twice a day for about 15 minutes to eat, to poo, and to drink. She's an old girl and poor layer, but she seems to be doing this broody thing really well. She turned up in my yard one day after a neighbour abandoned her, and while she lays badly formed eggs very irregularly, she might actually be of good use to me as a brooder and mother to some chicks. :)

My silkie on the other hand has been a bit of a poor brooder. She doesn't seem to want to cover all her eggs, has broken a few, is constantly up and down, and has now completely abandoned them and is no longer broody. This is her fourth broody period in 12 months, and every other time she has sat on an empty nest for 3 to 4 weeks. I put the eggs under her at night on day 3 of her brood thinking she'd happily sit it out.

Anyway, as she abandoned the nest yesterday afternoon, she was off the eggs for about 3-4 hours. She sat on them over night (I checked thrice through the night and they were always covered), but this morning had completely abandoned them again. It's been about 6 hours now.

Luckily (?) today another hen (a beautiful blue egg-laying Lavender Araucana) seems to be kicking into her first ever brood. She laid first thing this morning and keeps sitting on everyone else's eggs. As it's been a combined 10 hours over 2 days, what's the likely viability of these eggs hatching if I put them under her? Temps have been a minimum of 16°C/59°F and a max of 20°C/68°F.

I'll candle them tonight and look for signs of life, but wondering whether others have experienced something similar and what their outcome was.

I wouldn't give up on them, if you can get them under your other broody or in an incubator I would still go for it. My broody was up and down sometimes for a few hours and the eggs felt stone cold to me, but one of them still hatched (funnily enough it was a Lavender Araucana that hatched!) Chicks/eggs seem to be a fair bit hardier than we give them credit for.

Good luck. Also from Aus!

Thanks @L1sa! I haven't given up yet, and they look to be OK for now :). Lavender Araucana's are great chooks for sure. This one in particular took over a year to lay her first eggs and was flighty and unfriendly. She's only been laying a month, but she's really changed temperament for the better since laying that first egg. Too bad she's my only blue layer and will be out of action for a while. My other Araucana lays green eggs.

The good news is that the new broody has taken to the eggs without much of a problem. She panicked at first tonight when I moved her into the spare aviary with the other broody, but is now sitting fine.

I should have mentioned in the OP that these are Coturnix Quail eggs that I'd set under the Silkie. She was on 16 originally, but 2 were broken and 2 went missing! I wasn't keen on setting such small eggs under a full sized hen, but here we are.

The eggs are on day 6. I hadn't candled them until tonight, but there's definite veining in at least 7-8 of the eggs (they look like days 4-6 shown here), in 2-3 I can't see anything going on at all, and there are 2 that appear to have blood rings. I'm not 100% sure they're blood rings at this stage, so I'll leave them all in there with the new broody and candle again in a few nights time.

I didn't get any pictures as it's raining heavily here and I forgot to bring my phone to the coops with me. D'oh! I was pretty well drenched by the time I got back into the house. I'll make sure I get pictures on the next round.

I also took the liberty to check under the broody Wyandotte. She's 9 days in to her hatch and most appear to be going very well. There are a couple that appear to be unfertilised with no veining at all, but the rest look to have growing embryos. She's on 14 eggs. 6 x French Wheaton Marans, 6 x Barnevelders, and 2 x Onagadori (the Onagadori were set 2 days later as I received them free off the breed who gave me the Coturnix eggs, so are only on day 7).
