I have a coop that came with the house when we bought it 2 years ago. The wood is starting to show some age and I want re-stain it. do most of you remove chicken wire and hardware cloth prior to restraining? Seems hard to clean and restain thoroughly with it on. Thanks. Doug

I suppose it would depend on how hard it is to remove and what color the stain is.

Me, I'm lazy, I wouldn't remove it, but I also tend toward neutral earthy colors that wouldn't contrast horribly with the wire. My theory is it's a chicken coop, if I have runs in the stain around the wire, I don't care. Of course I also have some several year old plywood coops I've never put anything on, so I wouldn't go by me!

Hi Doug, welcome to BYC!

I've not had to do that so I can't tell you what is recommended. Guess it depends on how much work you want to make for yourself.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

I would leave it on and stain right over top the hardware cloth. Too much work, for little gain, the other way around for me.

Good luck!

Chickens won't notice the difference. If the structure is safe and sound, I wouldn't bother staining it. I'm more of a thinker than a doer.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've never stained a coop. I've always painted them using two coats of exterior latex paint before I attached the hardware cloth. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in re-staining your coop.
