Relocating broody hen

My hen has been full blown broody for over a week now. Hope she holds out until she gets the fertile eggs!

My Marans eggs HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY!!!!

Ordered these from the Garry Farm and they were packed so well with a nice note enclosed!! Wonderful folks to deal with!! I have unpacked them and they are resting until tonight.

OK have put the eggs under Miss Broody, tucked her in for the night! Will go out and check after while, but she was tucking them in under her better when I left .

We separated out broody hen the other day, all went well but I don't believe she has moved. I don't see any chicken poo in the cage and she can't get out unless we open the door. I opened the door for a while this afternoon and she didn't even move. I know chickens are social so do they get depressed while being broody? My daughter says she needs some company and wants to put another hen in the cage with her but part of the reason we moved her is that the hens were beginning to fight over the egg. Yes, she is only sitting on one egg!

If she's broody, she has no interest in being social.

My broody never poops in the nest either. She also rarely gets off the nest.

BUT when she does get off the nest . . . Holy Moly LOOK OUT -she goes stomping outta that coop like a hen on a mission!

She scratches around a bit then crunches out a huge broody poop!

The other chickens pretty much ignore her cuz she probably hasn't showered in days and her hair is a mess!

When she's done with her scratching, eating and drinking, she heads right back to her nest where she goes back into her trance.

AlienChick`s broody is typical of broody behavior. They sure don`t want company. They seem to enter a trans when they set and are not at all interrested in anything else. they will get off the nest to eat, drink, and eliminate when they get the urge. It`s all part of it. Don`t try to help........Pop

Thanks. I went out their this morning around 1030 and the egg was sitting behind her in the corner. I grabbed the egg and it was pretty cold. I put it in front of her and she shoved it right underneath her. What do you think the chances are that it is still viable? The last time I saw her last night was around 2330 and the egg was underneath her at that time.

I cannot answer that, maybe someone else can. I bought marans hatching eggs to put under my broody hen, and she took right to them. And the funniest thing happened this morning. I opened the cage to see if she wanted to get out and about for awhile(she did, but came right back after a few minutes). After she came back and was settled, before I shut the door to the cage, another hen went into the cage to investigate. I thought there may be trouble coming, but no, the other hen went in behind her, laid an egg in the corner of cage and promptly left the cage! This is a small light blue egg, and the broody hen gathered it under her! So I don't know if it is fertile or not but guess will just leave it alone and see. My roo is a cuckoo marans and that little hen is a small gold and cream colored Ameracana, so who knows what that little bitty may look like!

So, how long has your hen been setting on the Marans eggs? If she was on them more than a day, chances are the new egg will not be incubated long enough to hatch, whether it`s fertile or not. The standard scenario goes like this. The chicks hatch, and after a day, they are dry and the hen takes them from the nest and waters them and begins feeding them. Some hens stay on the nest 2 days after the first chick hatches, but don`t count on it. This is why it is important to keep other hens from adding to a clutch once the hen is setting. If you get too many eggs under a hen, they will get rotated out in the cold during her daily turning. Most of them will get cold and a bad hatch will result. I suggest you remove the new egg and take precautions that it doesn`t happen again......Pop
