Thanks everyone. Yes, I do believe haveing my son on the porch with the gun was the kicker. You see....altho I do not agree with my sons lifestyle...he is a "wannabe" Baggy pants, tatoos everywhere, shaved head...UGH! A mothers REAL Nightmare! LOL But, with him holding the gun, im sure she thought she was very lucky to get the dog back. I plan to follow through my threats. I will NOT shoot the dog. He is such a loveable boy....very sweet...just a chicken killer! IF there is a next time, I will take him to the next large town away.....about 30 minutes, and drop him at the pound....and HOPE he gets a new, better home! Of course, I will have to take off his collar....maybe mail it back to her! LOL No, just dispose of it...and let the dog get owners that will care for him properly.Thnks again everyone for the backup...

Wow Deb, you were very strong, you did well.
I do hope the pup doesnt return, I guess it also puts you in an unfavourable situation. If he does return and you rehome him, they may come looking for him. Just be ready.
I dont have confidence in them putting up a strong fence.
Heres hoping.

I used to have a beautiful red heeler cross called Jock, he's on my p/page having dinner with a chicken friend.
When I first met his dad, my son's dad, he came home with a chook in his mouth and he didnt eat it, he gave it to Ed probably to have for dinner. So somehow he jumped a high fence to go grab a chicken.
Ed felt really guilty about it and now I hope that the chicken wasnt someones loved pet.
That dog was my best mate, he was so loyal and never left me. But to think that he took a chicken, wow, really weird, and when I got chickens, he got excited but i just said NO in a hard tone and he never touched them once.
I even had them out all the time and he guarded them.
So If anyone here wants to adopt Deb's stray, perhaps it can be trained to behave too!

Well...IF he comes back, and she comes looking for him, I will just have to say....Nope, dont see him around here! A play on words so I wont be lieing! I wont have to say....I took him away. I would love for a BYC'er to adopt him, IF he should decide to come back. He really is a beautifull dog. I cant keep him I already have 4 dogs..and well..he has proven himself in my eyes. So, just in case....anyone want a 1 yr old black lab, male....named Biscuit!??? LOL

I can't believe the original owner who you had a talk to gave it to someone who lives so close to you. She knew the dog had caused problems and she didn't even have the right sense to make sure new owner lived on the other side of town. Hopefully new owner got the message loud and clear and keeps the dog contained to her yard.

Deb, I am really sorry that you have had to go through all this with the dogs, and the idiot owner, etc. Please do not think that I am condoning irresponsible pet ownership, or minimizing the loss of your chickens - that is in no way my intent. But I feel I must point out, just FYI, that, no matter how sweet that dog is (except for his unfortunate lapse in the matter of chickens) as a large breed, black dog he has only a very small chance of being adopted from a shelter into a loving (or any) home. Please take that into consideration, if you can, if he comes back.

And I have to agree, you were very patient with that dog's owner, more than many would have been.

ORChick......I agree...being a black lab, his chances might be slim to none to get adopted...maybe I can call a lab rescue orginization? Might be a better idea....unless someone on here might want him, IF he comes back.

I think since it is near christmas - you should find where this person lives - and bring her a gift basket with a book on how to train/handle dogs and a guide from lowes/home depot on fence building for dummies.

and if the bugger comes back find him a home somewhere really really far away - with a note attached to his collar - good dog but eats chickens !

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time getting these people to understand that you just want the dog to leave you alone ( and your chickens ). Do you think sending the sheriff to her house and talking to her would help her understand? or sending her a " bill ' for your rooster even if you dont expect her to pay at least she would know how much damage her dog did?

just thought i would throw my two cents in LOL
