Indeed, anything organic you put in the run will eventually decompose into a horrible reeking mud swamp, unless you go to the work of removing and replacing 'em before that happens. Wood chips will break down more slowly than wood shavings, but really inorganic things like sand/gravel are a much better bet. Heavier to move there in the first place, but you won't have to move them again

you can always throw the grass clipping in the run after you mow. The chickens will love it and it gets scratched into the dirt in no time!
 
So would it be best to look for sand to use in the run? I was originally thinking about straw that I could rake and replace...

(I think I'll be going with pine shavings for the coop)

DH did put sand in our run area , BUT just not enough . needs about 4 - 5 inches of sand . I love my coop and pine shavings keep it so fresh and clean . Plenty of ventilation tho
