Well I have completed the 1 hour shellectomy surgery on this little one. Being a paramedic for 17 years, I have helped many people and saved a couple lives, but helping a chickie by performing a shellectomy is a first for me. To say I was a little bit nervous.
Warm water, warm bankets, q-tips, scissors, 5 minutes of removing the shell, 10 minutes under the heat lamp. I've gotten most of it off, but there is still a little piece stuck to her butt and between her shoulders. I've had to stop because I pulled some of the fuzz off her back and it has a raw spot now. Same for the piece on her butt a little raw spot is starting. She is definately better, running around unimpeded hanging with her other little peeps.
Do I need to remove all the shell from her butt? Will it cause problems in a couple days when she starts to eat and poop? Should I put some bactriban or neosporin on the raw spots? She is back n the bator and I will leave her in there for a couple hours till she dries off again and I get some input from you vetran hatchers out there.
Also the other chicks are getting rambuncious and jumping on top of the other eggs and moving them around rolling them out of their way. There are still one or two that pipped and yet to hatch, do I need to worry about them? Temp has been steady at 100, it wet and rainy here so the humidity in the bator is at 89% right now. I would assume just let them go.
Thanks for the help,
Cory
