Replacing "free range diet" in the winter

Wild bird seed, shredded cabbage ( do not hang cabbage on string or twine), stored pumpkin or squash until you run out...diced tomato, apple...they are tru o,nivores and so long as you have ground oyster shell and grit available, they will shimmer as they feather for winter.

Oh and wild bird suet or flock block is excellent!

I had started a new thread on this before I saw this one.

I was considering growing grass indoors in trays under grow lights or in my greenhouse and feeding it to the chickens. Will that work. Can you use something like lemon grass?

I feed alfalfa hay all the time as they only eat the little green leaves but are not able to eat the stems. But I would not use any other type of fine, grassy hay that they would probably try to eat more of the stem and possibly get impacted.
