You can also use felt from the fabric store cut to fit. It is cheaper and just as good.

Yeah ok. I always used sand but I have heard it's not good for them.
I have no idea how It can be bad but anyway.
Reptile carpet is good!

Loose substrate, especially sand, can lead to impaction (blockage of the digestive track). Plus leos are not true desert dwellers so there is no real reason to keep them on sand.
