Reptipro 5000 Hatch-A-Long (=

Well we did pretty good on hatching this last batch, but I had one that hatched very slow, was gooey when it finally zipped and hatched out with a protrusion the size of a pencil eraser. Poor baby.
I also had 6 late quitters, I so hate to see the chicks kicking around at lockdown and then have nothing happen, only to find that they quit pretty much the day I lock them down.

After doing eggtopsies I'm pretty sure I've figured it out. I am incubating in a Hovabator (locking down in the Reptipro) think I'm incubating too dry. The humidity had been up in the house for a good while and I confess I haven't paid alot of attention to it being too low recently. I am going to be watching the air cells closer. I am now incubating on the top shelf of the Reptipro as well. Hummm

It's not able to keep itself upright and it's toes are all scrunched up. If it would get to sitting up better I could make it some 'shoes'. I suppose I should wait a bit..... ???

Sorry, we left for a while. So how is the baby doing? I wouldn't worry about the toes just yet. The humidity could come waaay down. Especially if you have others in there. Are you hatching in the ReptiPro 5000? I just got my 6000 today. Trying to get the temp right..not worried about humidity right now..but will when lock down comes.
Yes, your baby may want to be on it's side for a while..especially if it still has a bit of yolk to absorb. When it starts to peep loud, then you can put it in a nice warm brooder, and watch it from there. It will be easy to go touch it, and help it be on it's tummy. The touch is important. Don't...put it in with any other chicks yet though! Find a nice place for it alone until it is holding it's head up. Hope this helps. :)

There you are! I have found, that those egg trays take up a lot of room. I was hoping I would have some room somewhere to put my ~ what I will call, readers..for temp and all..No room for them.
I have tried the 103..my husband had a heart attack. He says, that the book says, that's too high! I laughed, and told him I'm going by what you guys are saying. I have two readers in there now on top of the turners. They are reading pretty close to the same, but as expected because I came to this thread, there is a degree difference. Had to bring the outside reader down twice. Just did that again. I think having it at 100 is going to do the trick. I have decided to try putting a piece of sponge on a side of each the egg turners. Just a small piece. Will check it out in a bit.
The door is a trick for me..hello..it's just a door handle! lol..but I have a hard time opening it and closing it back nice and tight, have to remember those cords need to be in the slots.
Well, will have fun waiting to hear how everyones hatch is doing. I want to see pictures..ya hear?!

Well, after reading here about the Brinsea and fan issues, it occurred to me when I installed my fan in my red bator now gonna be just a hatcher, I pointed the fan blowing down
hmm.png
so... I went in and it is now installed blowing from back to front. And I have fixed the last of my issues with it! I have installed a humidistat connected to a fish tank air pump to automate my humidity (and I love it), now my hygrometer at egg level reads what my humidistat is set at, I was having to set it at least 10 points higher then I wanted it, now it is spot on!
I am going to start a new thread for a new hatch along - hoping y'all join me.

New thread..for the new bator!

Well my 1 baby has lived to tell the tale of me peeling her shell and her crusty membrane off. It was hard as a rock. I soaked and waited and peeled and soaked and waited...she is doing pretty well now! She looked real sad for awhile. None of the others hatched and I'm guessing they all dried up. I have to believe that my humidity reading is off. She's alone now in the bator (5000). Where do I set the heat?

And a question for you guys.

Exactly what hydrometer do you use to read your humidity? I have one that is for reptiles but now as my 2nd hatch has brought crusty chicks I need to do something different as I'm going to order another bunch of eggs.

I named this chick Bugger. You can see her picture on my farm's FB page (link in my signature).

Thank you guys for so much help!!

The little one should only need to be heated around the 97 mark. I personally would take her out..put her in a broody to dry off all the way now. Sounds like she is going to make it! Good job. Really, just take her out now. Nice warm light bulb to keep her warm..in a bin or box, what ever you have that will be safe with a light bulb that won't be too close to catch fire..I have wire on top of my plastic bin..I lay the heat lamp on top of that. It is high enough I don't worry about them moving around to where they are comfortable, like, right under the lamp, or away from it when warm enough. It's according to how big the brooder/bin is..small one, only need a 60 watt..large bin..75 watt for a while. Day or two..then to 60. Going to see pictures!

She's in a tub with my heat lamp off to one side. I don't have a very flexible set up for brooders. I also put a little beanie baby bunny in with her after I snuggled her for awhile so she wouldn't be too lonely. I offered her some egg yolk and water but she didn't seem interested. I'll try again tomorrow. Sure it a cutie, I hope I get to keep her.

So what do you use to measure humidity. I need to switch.

I'm in the same position as you are when it comes to a good digital read out...I saw what yin was using in a past post. I may have to order one of those, or two, maybe she can remember which post..or maybe it was on the other thread? lol

Aww, your baby is lucky to have you. Having a fluff toy in there is a great idea. I use a small towel..like a dish towel to snuggle it around them when they are alone. It works pretty good, they feel snuggled in.

Egg yolk is a great idea. She will be fine..as you probably know, for a couple of days without food, and supposedly water, but I like getting a very small amount of water into them by the next day. Very small amount at a time, just a tiny drop. They will stretch their little necks out, look like they are pecking at the air..and then, a big gulp will happen. Then you know she got some down. That will do just a few times a day the first day. If she is up and walking around, you can dip her little beak in the water instead of putting a drop of water to her beak. She'll find the goodies. :)
