My dear fellow BYCers,

Our six ducks were hatched in May of 2016. To this day they have yet to be identified in terms of breed and sex, and have not produced a single egg. Needless to say, I have no way of knowing if all six of them are drakes, which is quite bothersome. I am in need of help to identify them, and if any of you could be so kind as to let me know if it is normal for ducks to wait this long to lay eggs.

Your answers are much obliged.

Below are the pictures of my ducks. Four of them have black-colored heads and two of them have brown-colored heads.

Once again, I thank you.

black heads are boys, brown are girls. They may have hatched too late to lay any eggs last year, so the girls should start laying this spring.

Your ratio is off with 4 boys to 2 girls though. I'm not sure where you are, but as the boys hormones kick into overdrive, they may start over mating the 2 girls

Thank you so much for resolving this itch in my back!
Is the proper ratio 1:1 for male-females? Perhaps I should cull two of the males, then?

Oh goodness...
This flock is so out of balance.
I guess I could hatch some more ducklings to make up the difference.

or if you have the room, have a boy pen and a girl pen. If they free range, that is a bit more difficult.
