Rescue chickens

I thought I'd present my lovely Georgina - before and after:

The picture to the left is from June and the right from November.

She came to me from the factory when she was 17 months old and was quite a different chicken from what she is now.

She has fully recovered and is now trying to catch up with the 1.5 years in the factory that was taken from her.

Her favourite hobbies are dust baths and chasing worms. She is a constant flurry of motion and have to run everywhere she's going.

I hope she gets at least a couple of years together with me and the other chooks. She is a joy to be around and is clearly loving being a chook :)
Beautiful girl! :love
It's so nice to see that she's changed. Good job on rescuing her! :clap

Isn't she just!? All the chooks I've rescued has blossomed into beautiful chickens with fantastic personalities.
They just need to figure out the basics, like how to run, roost, have a dustbath and get the hang of what day and night is all about ;-)

How did you rescue her? I've always wanted to know how exactly people are able to rescue the poor birds.
I'm so glad you gave her a second chance at life. :thumbsup

It was my "chicken contact" who has saved all the chooks in my care. It was a friend of a friend who got me in contact with her.

The factory she normally got them from had closed down (and changed into a another line of business), but she managed to get in contact with a person at another factory who said he would save four chickens (out of 21,000) for her.

I will spare you the details, but it's a grim shady business and "Free Range" is often a fraud.

Another alternative can also be volunteer organisations (such as HUHA here in New Zealand) that save large number of chickens and distribute them to people who are prepared to take care of them.

I've also seen rescue chooks advertised on TradeMe (the equivalent of eBay here in NZ).

Regards,
Dan

I am VERY interested in doing this as well, not quite ready yet....but DEFINITELY will be in my future. She was only 17 months old? Why would a factory be getting rid of her so soon? I would think she has a significant amount of "laying time" ahead of her.
