Rescue Chickens

If they spend time with the hens you should get more--they will probably eventually fight, and if they don't that poor hen won't get any rest.

BYC thread, after a quick search for "rooster to hen ratio." I'm sure there are plenty more.

You're looking at probably at least 11 more hens to even hit a 6:1 ratio--that's potentially more than a half dozen eggs a day and can be frequently up to a dozen eggs a day (depending on time of year and breeds).

I'm so glad you rescues the chicks! You will need more hens because she won't be able to handle two roos. I love the name Eggo and my roo is a very handsome White Leghorn! Good luck with your chicks!

Building a coop (2 actually in case they start getting hostile) and getting more hens soon. They were Easter chicks so I have some time I suppose to see whether their relationship is going to get overly aggressive. Building 2 coops to hold 6-8 chickens and going to try 2 flocks of 5 (+1 rooster each) if they need separating.

Other questions:

1. I let them range a lot, will their range times need to be separated as well or will the open space solve the potential aggression issues?
2. With 2 Coops/Runs I have a couple of thoughts. Back to back with separate runs or Coops on separate portions of my property (~3 acres). I'd prefer the single location just for landscaping issues but opposed to separate locations.
3. Assuming hen choices don't matter so much so considering some weak laying breeds so as not to be covered up with eggs, suggestions?

X3 They're very pretty, looks like a Roo to me, From what I heard, if you hold them upside down if a hen she'll I think bring her legs in or just sit there (like my pullets do which is silly cause they let me hold them like babies) and the Rooster will go crazy with kicking his legs.

Keeping (2) Roosters simply isn't working out that great right now. Work schedule has delayed the above mentioned plans of adding to the flock and building a second coop; so with that being said... I'm currently looking for a new no kill home for the Leghorn pictured above. Second photo is from a few weeks back. Around 20 weeks old (rescued around easter as chicks). Healthy & Happy and finally has worked his crow out to sound like a real chicken. Let me know if anyone can is willing to provide a home here or at [email protected].

Thanks
