I was curious if there were any rescue organizations for ex-battery hens in the united states. I have been looking everwhere and can't find anything! I really want to adopt a hen from a factory farm and give it a much better life.....I know it might seem weird!

I don't think many battery hens are removed from the factorys, they are sold for meat I think.

If you want to rescue a hen, look on pet finder or local farm sanctuary places. A lot of them rescue chickens from bad situations and neglect. I know our local animal control got the occasional chicken.

A couple of months ago there was a tornado that came through the next county over and it took out about 6 or 8 chicken houses over there and there was about a hundred thousand chickens that got loose and were everywhere. They announced on the news that if you find or catch any that you could keep them because the insurance companys had already reimbersed the owners. I wanted to drive over there and look for a couple but didn't know where I would start looking.

if you want rescue birds without the hassle of animal control folks, just look on Craigslist. At least in WA, someone is always giving away old hens, that still lay well. Make sure you quarentine them from your other animals for at least 30 days as you do not know what might be wrong till closer inspection.

I don't think it would be a hassle dealing with animal control folks. It is another option for her if she wants some hens.

A lot of times (have seen it done here) you can call a egg farm near you and ask if they have any stewing hens for sale, that they are ready to get rid of. You cannot tell them you want to rescue them but once you get them home, it really doesnt matter.

Hi Lindsay - I live just up the road in Conroe. We adopted 10 chickens from the Houston SPCA just this past November. If you are interested in farm animal adoption - you will need to complete an application (I think it's also available online) The birds that we adopted had been part of a cock-fighting ring seizure. The fighting roosters had to be euthanized, but the hens were perfectly healthy.

If you want more information - feel free to PM me I can give you my contact there and her direct phone#.
