Rescue rooster

Welcome. I have 4 roosters and I adore them. I will give you the other option. If you do not want to get him a flock, he will do fine as long as you spend a few hours a day with him. At the end of the day, it is just about making sure they don't get lonely. Roosters are great by themselves if you have the time.

Please remember that getting him a flock is a double-edge sword. By himself, he will be the best friend you can have...but with hens, he has a job to do; to protect with his life, to find food and to mate. He will still be a good friend, but triggers for the need to protect may make him upset with you sometimes. If you get hens, you will be fine as long as you see things though his eyes, not your own

Oh dear. My backyard is pretty small. I don't know that I can have that many chickens.
It isn't a hard and fast rule. I've had a rooster with 20+ hens and a couple (his favorites) were always overbred. I have roosters with one hen and the hens show very little feather wear. Don't worry just enjoy.

Good luck with your rooster!

Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely be able to spend my mornings in the backyard with him come spring. If I notice that he feels lonely I'll get him company.
