I know someone in Salt Lake City who just had 7 ducks and geese dumped on his pond. They're all Easter gifts. He doesn't have the room or the finances to take care of them, he's overrun.
He says that its like this every single year. He runs a duck and goose rescue and he gets people dumping them all the time.
I guess technically I have 5, Willis and Nicholas out front with Gretchen (my guard goose..lol) And int he fenced back yard I have Johnny, June, Aubry and Ducky! Johnny and June came waddling over last night to see the new babies! They sat down next to the pen and just talked to them! I am going to go out and get some pictures!
Easter gifts...should have thought about that before you got the darn ducks..and then dump them, what?
I am sooooo glad you were able to take them. Good thing it wasn't me or i would have gave them an education about NOT giving their daughter everything SHE WANTS!! and what can happen to a domesticated duck released into the wild...
When I went to pick up my babies to start my little chicken farm the people at the store blatantly made a comment about me having a lot of kids to buy easter gifts for ( I started with 12). I was appalled and let them know that I was starting a farm and that it was sick to think that anyone would be buying a baby chick to put in a easter basket for a child....I left the store wondering if this was common practice and felt a little better thinking "well there is a 6 minimum, so maybe that will deter people".
To my dismay it does not. Three weeks later I was shooting pool when a guy walked up and asked if I would take in two baby ducks cause he had bought the 6 minimum but really only wanted one for his girlfriend for easter. He was able to find homes for three but was having trouble getting rid of the last two and had heard that I had just got some chickens. I agreed and two days later went to pick them up. These people are living in a tiny apartment in the "seedy" part of town. No yard for the birds and no room in the apartment for them to move around and garbage everywhere!
What are people thinking?!
I have since become an advocate of "minimum buys" and think the stores should actually RAISE the minimums!
i just read this thread and it sickins me. i also think they should raise the minimums. Farm stores and Farmers i think need to be more carful about this. like if to parents come in and say that they are getting a duck or chick for the basket. then there should be some questions asked before the duck/chick is sold. like how big is your yard? ever had a duck/chick before? do you know about the med. conditions that they get? can you afford them? and if they dont have even 1 more at home i know how you all feel but i dont think just they should have to live alone.
good job on the rescue i just rescued to last week and it is a great feeling!
Thanks for bringing this issue out in the open again. Those of us who LOVE our fowl (and bunnies) would never do anything like putting a live critter in an Easter basket. Most newspapers and Sunday-supplement magazines will run blurbs about NOT getting live chicks, etc. for Easter gifts, but there are SO many people out there that ignore common sense!
Thanks for taking the babies --- I'm always on the lookout for things like that myself.
I had a lone hatch and needed to buy ONE duck so it would have a friend. I did NOT need 5 EXTRA ducks. Screwing over people who know what they are doing because someone else might do something stupid helps nobody.
Minimums do not stop the truly stupid from being stupid and is just a major annoyance to the rest of us.
