Rescued a 14 year old chicken

Nice job saving the hen! My neighbor keeps ducks and chickens together (on an acre) and they do fine. Most of the time they keep their distance from the other flock. At night they also choose to sleep in different areas. They don't fight though and have never caused problems together.

Welcome to BYC. She is a crossbred hen, and hybrid vigor has given her great viability. Chicken hens and duck hens together is not a problem. The problem with ducks and chickens is when drakes start breeding chicken hens.

I agree sourland. On memorial day we were over to my sons house and he has a lot of chickens and 2 ducks. I was looking at his hens when those two ducks grabbed a hen by the neck and they were pulling her from both ways while the rooster came running and started pecking the hen on the head. She was screaming and trying to get away. eventually she got loose, after the third try, and ran into the coop and up on a roost as the ducks couldn't chase her any farther. I really felt sorry for the chicken.

We only have the three girls, no intentions on any males in the mix. I may get one more hen. We watched them very closely for the first week. No problems at all, but the run is very large so they all have their own space. The three nap together in a little circle but basically ignore each other. The hen that at first was terrified to death now follows me around when I clean up in the pen to the point I have to watch where I step :) she's a sweetie.
