This is sort of a long post.. but I believe that it was a once
in a lifetime opportunity, and I want to share!
Tuesday, I had scheduled to meet my daughter for lunch at
school and celebrate her SUMMER birthday with the class.
1/2 hour before I was to leave, I went into the garage to
check on the chicks and when I went in, I heard this buzzing
noise and realized that a hummingbird had flown into the
garage and could not figure out how to get out.
It was zooming back and forth at the top of the rafters.
I just knew it was going to run out of gas unless I could
shoo it outside. Well, that proved to be a hopeless task.
I even tried to catch it with a fishing net.
I left the garage for 10 minutes and returned to hear it barely
puttering along. I tried to climb a ladder and catch it in the
net.. no luck again. Then I didn't hear it and became worried.
A minute later I spotted it barely flying next to the back
wall... then it just fell.... behind a bunch of stuff.. EEK!
I went to find it and started slowing moving things, talking softly.
I just happened to look up and there it was, hanging upside
down on the wall by one little foot. I gently took it from the
wall and took it to the feeder (outside) It drank a little nectar,
but was too pooped to fly. It was so tired.
It just kept closing it's eyes.
I had to leave for school, so I took it with me in a plastic
basket with some screen over it. When we got to school,
it was feeling better. The kids and teachers enjoyed seeing it.
When I got home with it an hour later, I fed it some more,
let it rest, then fed it one more time.
She flew away about then.
It was SO COOL!!! Here are some pictures
