A baby Canadian goose was left behind by his mother in my yard. After inspection, he’s got a cut along the inside of his hip making it difficult for him to walk. I’m taking him in for now with the hope of returning him once he’s well. He can’t be more than a week old. Since I’m not planning on having him too long, I was not planning on buying him any food. I was hoping I could give him my chicken’s food, which is a layer feed and is calcium fortified. I know that too much calcium is harmful for young birds. Would I be able to give him the chicken’s food for the time being, or is there a better solution?

Once a baby bird is away from its mom usually they won’t accept each other. If you could get all flock feed that is what I use as duckling starter and what they don’t it it is fine for the hens. How long do you plane on having him?

The chicken feed is unmedicated, so I’ll give that to him. His wound is already looking better and he’s starting to walk again. So hopefully I can try to return him in the next day or two.
