This sweet Blue Swedish boy was abandoned by his former owner on a pond at my workplace in southern New Hampshire. We have photo evidence of him living with wild mallards since August, but after they flew away in search of food and open water, he was left alone, starving on the frozen pond, keeping safe in a tiny circle of icy water that had not yet frozen.
My co-worker and I went out and fed him and eventually were able to catch him last week. He is thin but healthy, and pending the results of his Avian Influenza and Salmonella tests, he will be up for adoption sometime after the holidays.
I am not set up for ducks, but he is a sweetheart and enjoys being talked to while he preens. I feel sorry he's so lonely in quarantine right now. I named him Damocles after the Greek parable of the successful man with a supernatural sword (in this case of predation and starvation) hanging always a hair's breadth over his head.
PM me with information about your duck experience and any interest in adopting a New Year's duck!
