As someone who has accepted rescued emus, this makes us sad:

It is incomprehensible to me that things like this happen.

I don't have any trouble with killing things to eat them.

We can squabble over the psychology of shooting things and leaving the carcasses to rot -- I've done it, was raised to it. Have done it,on one occasion, to emus. (Strange how One Person somehow comes to be Other Persons as life goes on)

But it's hard to imagine what argument you'd bring to bear to justify shooting a bird over a fence and leaving it to bleed.
