Rescued Emu

here's a pic showing the old wound site on the rescued bird, which is now just a large bald spot behind the right thigh. It is fully healed and the beginning of new feathers can be seen when you are close to the bird. The new bird loves pacing up and down the fenceline with the rival male in the adjoining pen.

This stuff is great for me, E.S., cause any doctoring I ever need to do is gonna be done by me alone. Everything I can learn about how birds heal is helpful.

S.E.
unless the injury is very severe, most of the time it is better to just let nature take its course. Emus are a hardy breed and usually recover quite nicely.

Do emu's usually eat items like broken glass? Are they attracted because it's shiny or are they starving and eat it out of desperation?? I would think it would cut them up going down and they wouldn't want to eat anymore.

So glad to hear the rescue is eating well. Robust appetites always make me think some animal is getting better.

Hey Drumstick!
Emus will often swallow anything they can get down their throat! They like hard things such as small stones, pebbles and yes, even bits of shells and glass, as it helps them with their digestion. The shells also can provide extra sources of calcium. They also swallow things to "taste" them, and lastly, like SE said, emus, like alot of birds, are attracted to shiny objects. Its interesting because almost all of the glass that we have collected has had smooth, almost polished edges, which tells me that there is a lot of hard objects in its digestive system working together to grind the edges of the glass smooth.

NEAT!! Maybe you could feed them 'diamonds in the rough' and they'll come out polished - just clean, sanitize and sell them. You'll be rich
