Hey all! So I seemed to have bit off more than I can chew. I currently have a dozen chickens. 9 one year olds, and 3 two month olds. Tonight I saw a post on a neighbor app that someone found 3 lost chickens down the road 5 minutes from my home. I found these 3 chickens literally standing at a sign of a 60 acre aubobon society. Across the street there is a golf course and not a house in site. I asked the closest houses if they knew the chickens or who had chickens in the immediate area- nope. I would have to assume someone did not want the chickens and thought it would be a good idea 🙄 to drop them off at the entrance of the woods. We waited until dusk and they didn’t move, just standing there confused. I had my oldest daughter with me and we did not have the heart to leave them. Two appear to be fine other than missing saddle feathers. The third one is missing feathers at the head as well as an injured leg (no blood). We ended up taking them home and quaranting them on the feed side of the coop. My girls are healthy we have been very lucky to have no instances with mites worms etc. We are very protective of our flock as they are pets to my children. My question is how long should they be quarantined and is it ok to do that on the feed side of the coop separated by a wired wall/door. Secondly what should I treat them with to make sure they do not have any issues. It’s really important to me they do not spread anything to the rest of my girls. And lastly should they all go to the vet to get checked? I’m assuming the one with the hurt leg will end up there. I apologize for this lengthy post but this is something new to us! Thank you.

I've picked up plenty of abandoned\lost chickens over the years and never really thought about this... I already had mites on my birds from hay, so that wasn't an issue. My first rooster (Kingsley) I had was a rescue. I went to save one rooster, not knowing about Kingsley, and ended up coming home with what I thought was that rooster, but ended up with Kingsley. Sadly we wasn't able to save the other rooster, though. Sparkles was a hen that came one day and wanted to move into my flock. What was cool was that I had a flock that was the very same age as her. Some of my rescues was my best birds, except for one rooster. That rooster (Douglas) was mean to a couple of my hens but not to people.
Either way, rescuing chickens is exciting. I've heard of two week quarantine. The baldness on back and neck\head says that they've been around roosters. Without seeing them, I'm assuming that they are either two or three years old or older. Start a thread for that hen's leg. They could probably help with her. Check for mites. They most likely have that. There is threads on that. Watch their poop. That will say a lot. Feel free to share any pictures of the birds. We all love to see pictures :love
