Hello all! About 4 mos ago, a friend of mine posted about a free rooster who was attacked by a dog in our downtown area. (Chickens aren't allowed in city limit) The people who rescued him had a squirrel rehab/rescue place and were not set up for chickens and didn't know how to care for them. They had no luck finding an owner, so they gave him to us to care for. No owner has been found.
I had been wanting a rooster. He had no open wounds but was missing many tail feathers and had a substantial limp. We quaranteed him and long story short...he is healed. We introduced him to our 8 girls and he is a wonderful roo. We named him Charlie as he is such a friendly chap and takes care of his girls very well.
We have Sapphire Gem hens. I know they are a hybrid. Charlie has many barred feather across his breast and belly and since Sappires are a cross with barred plymouth rocks, I was hoping that he has those genes.
We currently have our first ever batch of chicks in the incubator and after candling today, it looks like 11 of the 12 are viable! Yay!
What are your thoughts on our Charlie boy? Thanks
