Rescued some Leghorns last night (graphic pic)

You need to be very careful about handling these new birds and then going to your flock and touching them. Either wash up or get some disposable gloves.

I would recommend based on the description of issues with the new birds that you really look at giving them antibiotics and wormer. Also look for mites/lice on the skin. Open wounds should be treated twice a day and have those birds separated in there own pen, like a rabbit cage.

I wonder if good ol' apple cider vinegar in their water would help reset their healthy digestive bacteria.
Also I agree with plain yoghurt too.
It sounds like a bacterial infection, probably from wallowing about in such filth.
Fingers crossed that they have a speedy recovery.
How many did you rescue?

Hmm...that sounds like vent gleet. It's a nasty yeast infection but can be treated with epsom salts. Learned about it on another blog. Search on byc and here's a couple links. Dose them with epsom salts in their waterer for a single day or by syringe to provide a laxative that will flush their system and then acv in the water and a bit of yogurt.

http://ultimatefowl.atwiki.com/page/Vent Gleet Dosage for epsom salt is in this link Epsom Salt: 1 lb Epsom Salt per 5 gallons water for 1 day. If the birds are unable to eat or drink by themselves, use individual treatment with 1 teaspoon of Epsom Salt in 1 fl oz water. Feed the bird with a syringe.

If the epsom salt doesn't work, then you can try spraying her behind with providone iodine. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=463853

Take
care,

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I kept them seperate for about a week before introducing them to the flock and they've been fine. I'll give them some yogurt.

I rescued 10, and I wouldn't say it was animal cruelty. They were in much better shape them a battery hen, and thats not considered animal cruelty.
