Rescues

I took in 7 ducks yesterday and 5 more today. I wouldn't say they were unwanted, just in need of new homes.

Of the 40 ducks we have, all but 7 are rescues/refugees.
4 of the 7 geese here are as well.

wow Terry, I have only 6.......totally addicted I am.....if I had more time and money I would just keep on getting some. I love the runners I have....nice to hear them Quack, I was used to Muscovy ducks ,they are SO quiet !

Yeppo, I did when I bought my little farm. If I didn't take the chickens they would have been "dispached". Although the farm itself was in great condition, the chickens were not. So, since I wanted chickens anyway I said I would take them rather than have them killed. My little flock has a new great run, renovated coop, nutrional food, nesting boxes, electricity, shavings, and lots of care. They have repaid it all with trust (they were never handled, never hand fed) and maybe one day they will have the courage to venture out of the coop with me to free range a couple of hours a day. Maybe soon; up to them.

Love rescues!

Most of all but the peafowl we have gotten from cited people for animal crualty and neglect from the local shelter we are expanding on what we have now to house the birds. we broke more ground today and plann to take on more and more everyday

Most of the chickens we've had have been unwanted. Our first two came from an egg farm. We bought them for $2 each since they were considered to be past their prime. They layed like crazy for a few more years! Next a friend gave me some her excess pullets after raising her spring chicks. She then helped friends who were divorcing find home for their chickens. We took three. Two turned out to be roosters and went back to my friend. Then we took in two from next door who kept sneaking under our fence to hang out with my girls. They just stopped going home one day. (Yup, I'm a chicken thief!) Two more I got from a guy on Free Cycle who was looking to downsize his flock to make room for younger hens. And two I got from the University of Connecticut poultry department when they downsized. Chicks will be a new venture this spring!

I don't know if you'd call Slifer a rescue, but she couldn't have stayed where she was much longer...She had no feathers and bent toes and she crowed!
Penny was being walked all over by the 3 other birds in the cage so I felt bad for her and took her home. so that's not really a rescue either.

Of course.....I think in some way, we ALL rescue them. My DH and I do Farm Animal Rescue. We have taken in many chickens and ducks. Hopeing next year to take in larger rescues.....once we get the fencing up.
