(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Nope, not new to chickens. I completed my B.S. in Animal Science in 2012 and went on to do a Ph.D. focused the nutrition and management of heritage breed chickens. I'm now a research & extension professor at Lincoln University of Missouri. My work focuses on managing small-scale laying hens and meat birds.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Depends on the week. I currently have ~130 meat chickens, ~40 laying hens, and some exhibition birds.

(3) What breeds do you have?

This also changes. Currently, Cornish Cross meat birds, Delawares, Speckled Sussex, Black Sex-Link, Rhode Island Red bantams, Dark Brahma bantams, Lavender Orpingtons, White Crested Black Polish, Seramas, and a beautiful Jersey Giant cockerel

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love that chickens have something for everyone and they really aren't difficult for people to raise (compared to other livestock).

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Hiking, swimming, weightlifting, traveling

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

As a professor, I spend about half my time conducting research (focused on nutrition, management, welfare, etc.) and the other half working with small- and medium-sized producers interested in poultry. I enjoy sharing my experiences on my Facebook page (Lincoln University Poultry) and Instagram (@lincolnupoultry).

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I'm sure I found BYC through Google at some point years ago. I finally joined because I'm dipping my toes into the exhibition side of poultry and there seem to be a lot of people with great experience in that area.

Glad you are here, and also your birds!
