Researching Before Committing

We also researched for over a year before deciding on a small backyard flock. It wasn't as easy to find ordinance information as we'd hoped, but we finally found it. In our city, backyard chickens are permitted but they must be penned at all times. No free ranging in the city unless your land tract is over 1 acre.

Roosters are not allowed simply because of their crowing, which is sort of dumb because people are allowed let their dogs bark and yap at all hours unless there are complaints. It's been quite a cool experience and we've learned an awful lot in the nearly 2 years we've had them.

That being said, there's always more to learn and BYC is an excellent source of knowledge for all things fowl. You didn't say where you are from, but you can do a search for threads created for your state and sometimes even your city. Getting in with local poultry folks can be really helpful sometimes when you need regional based advice.

G’Day from down under Deedra :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you are allowed to keep chickens, you might find this article helpful in deciding on a breed: Pickin a Chicken

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

Best wishes and good luck!
