Respiratory Illness? Can anyone offer advice?

I have a small flock of Bielefelder Hens and one Black Copper Marans Rooster. Over the last few months I have lost 3 birds to some sort of respiratory illness. The guy at the feed store thought fowl pox, as they seemed to be having difficulty breathing, but none have shown any of the other symptoms and each bird died at least a month after the one before. Does it have that long of an incubation period? Why are they only getting sick one at a time? I just lost my lovely Roo this morning and he was totally fine yesterday. They have all died within hours of showing any symptoms at all. Does anyone have any ideas? The other hens are all in perfect health. They have a huge run, are in the shade, lots of water and food. This is so sad and frustrating!

Wish I could help... sorry for your losses. That has to be hard when it continues to happen over a long time period with no real explanation. I would strongly recommend that you save and chill the next loss and send it out for necropsy to determine what's going on. Most state labs will do it for free or cheap. I wouldn't waste time asking a vet to do it for you as they rarely if ever have the proper training knowledge to do so.

After having deaths I would also recommend getting your chickens tested, or getting a necropsy on any others that die. What are all of the symptoms you have seen with each sick chicken? Did they actually have any signs of foul pox? Wet fowl pox which causes lesions inside the throat and airway, can be deadly. Dry pox is usually not fatal. A good reference for both respiratory and other common diseases with symptoms is here:
