Once I start treating my hen for her respiratory infection, how long til I see her improving?
It’s been 4 days and I feel like she’s not getting any better, not worse, but not better.

Can you provide more information along with photos?

What are her symptoms?
What medication and dose are you giving?

A lot depends on which respiratory disease you are dealing with. Some are viral which will have to run their course, while others are bacterial. Not all antibiotics are equal when treating certain diseases. It may be that you are not using the correct medication or dosing.

Hopefully with more info, we can offer better suggestions.

Are you seeing bubbles or foam in an eye, sneezing, mucus from the nostrils or beak, noisy breathing, gasping for air, head shaking, or any swelling around an eye? What are you using for treatment?

No bubbles or foam, no mucus anywhere, no eye sweeping. Yes for noisy breathing, gasping for air, a little head shaking…not much and I’ve seen her sneeze maybe twice.

My vet prescribed Oxytetracycline HC powered to be mixed in the flocks water. I also give her a less diluted drop a couple times a day. She’s a tiny silkie

Oxytetracycline will treat symptoms of mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) If she has infectious bronchitis virus, antibiotics don’t help, but you might notice others having the sneezy/mucus symptoms.

I did notice last week 2 other hens were starting to have noisy breathing and since the medication they have stopped.
No sneezy/mucus on any of the hens.

Check her over really well for lice/mites, look inside her ears for infection and make sure her crop is emptying overnight.

If she doesn't respond to the recommended treatment your vet prescribed, then you may want to let them know, they may have something else they can give her or have better suggestions.

Do you know how long it usually takes for the medicine to help with a respiratory issue?
