Buffy - Buff Orpington just started laying in March - hatched 27 Nov 2017. I thought I had been seeing signs that she was having trouble - but we are new to chickens and trying not to panic about every sneeze or twitch. I noticed she had her mouth open while sleeping for some time now. Today, she sounds like she swallowed a squeaky toy. What should we do?

I have VetRx - but not real clear on how to use it. I have Tylan 200 for the goats, but I do NOT feel comfortable giving a chicken a shot! I will if I absolutely must - but hoping to try other means of administrating it if possible. How much? How often? for how long? Orally??

I have her isolated in a tiny cage for now - she is not happy about that.

Anyone??? I tried starting her on oral Tylan and put VetRX under everyones wings before bed. This is our first real problem with our babies and could use a little help - please.

I’ve only ever heard of using a Tylan 50 on chickens. Not the 200. I know with Tylan 50 you give 0.5cc every 8 hours or 1.5cc once a day - at least that’s what my local poultry vet told me.
VetRx I think can be applied directly on them - under wings, or on the beak. But I also know people who put it in water.
Other antibiotics are the Duramycin, Tetracycline.

Additionally I think Tylan 50 is suggested 3-5 days. I inject between the shoulder blades subcutaneously by pinching the skin in between. I hold them between my legs while sitting.

I’m just gonna throw this out there but could it be a full crop in stead? I’ve notice when my chickens get a full crop they wil sound wheezy sometimes:idunno

THANKS for the replies... It's not her crop - I don't think. I felt and massaged her throat and crop.

I tried to start her on .25cc of Tylan200 - Orally. The 1st dose - I think she got it. The 2nd dose, I think she got more of it ON her than IN her. I treated all of the big girls with VetRX under their wings before they went to bed.

She HATED being locked in the cage! Cried and sounded horse - I couldn't do it - I let her out. She was eating, drinking and running around before bed time. She did NOT sound as bad with the evening dose (no more squeaky toy).

Someone on Facebook said we should give Denegard to the entire flock. I am going to start calling in the morning to see if I can find that locally - or order from eBay?

For say a 5 lb chicken draw up .75CC and give 1/2 or .35CC in the left breast muscle and the rest of the dose subcutaneously or under the skin on the back of the hens neck with the needle pointing away from the bird's head.
That seems like a really high dose of Tylan 200 ?? Not to mention that I have never given a bird an injection anywhere.
