I have an older Brown Leghorn (4ish) who had rattled breathing at night. I never heard it during the day. I listened to her lungs and they sounded fine. It seemed to be in her throat. Then one day she coughed. I started her on colloidal silver. I put a drip right over her nostrils so she would breathe it in and gave her more by mouth to coat her throat. I still mostly heard problems at night. When she runs and gets worked up she is worse. Never runny eyes or nose. No crusty anything. In her mouth at the back of her throat I can see what looks like an excess of saliva. It's clear and not smelly. I've continued to give her the silver for almost 2 weeks now. She's received some propolis as well. Not daily but every three or four days. I do my best to do it when she goes to roost as not to get her worked up. I then noticed she was coughing more when I was giving her the silver. So I didn't give it to her one day. She went back to coughing in the day...
Everything I've read about respiratory issues antibiotics aren't exactly helpful. Unless you know what you are dealing with. And no...no vet around that works with chickens. One other bird sneezed and instantly got silver as well. After a week of cautionary silver daily that bird is fine. All others have also gotten some silver and propolis just in case. Everyone is acting normal.
My question is how long can I give her colloidal silver? Information on dosage and duration is all over the place. I'm working on making my own and was going to let everyone drink it. I'm at a loss as what to do. I'll keep giving her the silver as it does seem to be helping but I'm wondering if she'll need it for life at this point.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
