I have a new baby goose. She eats and drinks very well. Lots of energy and very vocal. However, in between her peeps there’s an odd rasping sound. I put my ear to her chest and it sounds clear, no gurgling or fluid sounds. But every 4th or 5th breath there’s that odd grunt or raspy sound. should I be concerned or is she making this noise on her own? I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Feel her crop. If it's full of liquid, it could be backing up into her throat and causing this sound as it passes over the trachea. If the crop is full, do not put pressure on it or try to empty it. You could lose her if you do. Double check the crop in the morning. It should be empty. If not, that confirms a crop disorder.

How old is she? Look into her throat to be sure a foreign object isn't stuck in there.

Thank you! Her crop is soft and a bit meaty but I wouldn’t say over large. I can’t tell if I’m feeling tissue or fluid. I have a vet appointment on Friday but I’ll move it to tomorrow. Is this something that can be fixed? Is it rare or common? She was born on February 1st.

A video posted to YouTube with a post here could be helpful. I have a hen who sounds like a goose, so it might not be anything serious.

Thanks. I just received advice that it could be her crop full of liquid. I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow.
