I'm having a hard time finding similar threads (that came back to say how it went). My broody has been sitting for about a week but I need to restart her on new eggs (the eggs she has right now ended up having very low fertility so I want to try a different breeder). She will be about 10 days in by the time I can give her the new eggs. Will she sit the extra time until they hatch? It's springtime in MA right now and very cool (nights in the upper 30s and lower 40s, days in the 50s) so she won't overheat. I usually pamper my broodies by bringing them scrambled eggs to the nest to make sure they eat enough (they really enjoy and appreciate it). She has food and water right outside the nest. Is this going to work?

Do you have an incubator incase she leaves the nest? I think she'd sit for an extra ten days but there is the chance she may not. I had a snake get into my coop and wait for my broody to leave the nest and he gobbled up all the eggs. They were all on day 7-10. I gave her more eggs to hatch but I had to collect them first which took a few days so she ended up sitting for over thirty days.

Thanks for the input! Wow, a snake! I do have an incubator. I’d much rather have her do it, but if something goes wrong I can hand raise them. Hopefully she’ll stick with it…

I am doing this right now. My broody actually sat almost the full 21 days before we realized all the eggs were duds. We got her new, fertile eggs and she is on day 19 of the reset now. My understanding is that broodys will sit almost indefinitely if they’re determined, but of course it’s not healthy to let them brood for too long.

Good to know, thanks! I'm glad I caught my duds early enough. She will end up sitting only about a week or so longer than usual, I hope she does okay.
