My grandmother, mother, and I raised 100 new chicks every year. When I retired, I built a coop and raised 3 barred plymouth rock (BPR). Now I've moved to Baja Sur Mexico and had a coop built. The first year was a bust. I couldn't find BPR so gave in and just picked out 4 chickens, I was guaranteed "egg layers." Got 3 roosters and 1 hen so I donated all and re-started. This time, I sexed the chicks myself and got 4 girls--one BPR and three American game hens. The BPR is a great layer and queen of the flock. The other 3 lay 2-3 eggs each a week. I kept poking around town and finally got 4 BPR rooster poults. They are feisty little guys. 3 will get donated around Thanksgiving and 1 will get lucky with the girls. The BPR hen, Speckles, tries to get broody so I'm hopeful once I introduce her mate, I can eventually create a small flock of just BPR. It's just a hobby. I don't eat that many eggs, but no one ever turns down a dozen free, fresh eggs.
