I was wondering if anyone knows if it is at all possible to reuse pool filter sand in my chicken coop. I just recently changed out my old pool filter sand for fresh sand. Rather than just throwing it all out I was hoping that my maybe i could re purpose the sand in my chicken coop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We couldn't possibly know if there were chemicals added to the sand.
If there were, the chickens could be poisoned when they ingest the sand.

Sand is not porous and therefore won't retain chemicals. It's not any more filthy than the pool water was and kids drink that, so... But, I wouldn't use it straight from the filter just because it's wet with chlorine (or bromine) and that's hard on skin with a lot of exposure. If you can pile it somewhere for a few months first where it can get rain rinsed, then I'd expect it to be OK.

All of the chemicals used in swimming pools are already present in tap water (treated city water). The only exception is the stabilizer, and that is still safe. Nothing has the ability to built to paranoia levels. All of the chemicals in the filter are diluted to exactly the levels in the pool.

The filter sand is actually cleaner (pathogen/germ wise) than the sand/dirt already in the coop/run (assuming the pool wasn't a swamp when it was removed).
