Well, I've noticed that my Pekin Drake was getting a little nasty, but nothing that would be a great danger to my chickens. I just went out to put them all in and noticed Lacey (my golden laced cochin) floating in the kiddie pool.

They were fine an hour ago. She has been roosting high in our new enclosed pen but goes in the coop at night. Lacey was beautiful and just started laying. My daughter is going to be DEVASTATED!! I don't even know what to say.. She couldn't even "fly" away as the pen and coop is fully enclosed and predator proof! I am so sick! I shoveled her out of the pool and buried her real quick out in the woods. My drake has 2 females, should I get more girls or get rid of him? My kids are not going to forgive him! I really want to throw him on the BBQ right now

Sorry about your chicken.

I know your kids will be sad.

If it's any consolation, he probably wasn't trying to be nasty. He was trying to breed her. Ducks often breed in the water. Unfortunately, poor Lacey wasn't a duck and drowned because he held her down. Drakes are very rough when they breed. I wouldn't put any more chickens in with him.

But yes, he would be happier with a few more lady ducks. About five ducks to a drake is a good mix.

I'm sorry for what happened

I'd either get rid of him or separate him so he can't hurt anyone else. Good luck with explaining to the kids, I am sure you'll be able to put it in a way that won't be so bad.

I have him separated for now... I will try to let him out with his 2 ladies for some "supervised" mating for an hour or so a day. I will try to get him a few more ladies. Would that solve the problem? Will he leave the chickens alone if he has enough females? I love getting fertile eggs and I'd hate to get rid of him, I hatched him myself. He is sweet to me and the kids, no aggression. He does not mess with my 3 very large hens. They all got along so well for so long now

Thanks for the luck explaining this to my kids.. I am going to need it

Again, I'm sorry for your poor hen, but I wouldn't do something rash like roast him. He shows no aggression to you or the kids. He's not mean. He's just being a drake.

He really doesn't sound nasty to me--just sort of over-sexed at the moment. A few more ladies would certainly make him happy. AND it would make your other two ladies happier. He wouldn't bother them as much.

how do you know the chicken didn't drown?, just asking

had a couple dumb, yes they were DUMB, chickens try to drink from the kiddy pool the ducks have, fall in, I'd get them back out, and later I'd find them drowned

I'm sorry you lost your Lacey. My drakes are just like that. I keep him away from the girls, he terrorizes them all. I don't know whats up with these drakes, but I was told that the Pekin are quite sexually aggressive.
As we have found out. I also have a crested drake too, not sure what breed he is, and he's no better than the Pekin! Good luck with your babies. I agree, don't roast him, just keep him away from your hens.
