Rhode island red help?

I have 3 pure rir pullets I hatched out myself and they have little black spots on their backs. IS that normal? I don't hvae a camera so i cant post pics for now. They have a bout 10 black spots on their wings and back. I never had that happen

Here are true, RIR chicks at hatch. (with the little dark chick excepted) I borrowed the photo, OK, I stole it, from the heritage RIR thread. You mentioned your chicks were purebred. Where did you get the parent stock? Any chance of any other rooster being "involved"?

They look like this. I know they are pullets cos one laid an egg already. Look at this but with more black spots. The parents r from murray mcmurray

As was explained better on the other thread that you posted these birds, they aren't "pure" RIR. Hatcheries rarely, rarely sell anything pure and especially not Rhode Island Reds. The smutting you see, the lack of body type, the lack of deep red, almost shiny black coloration all point to what is called a production red or hatchery quality red bird.

The strains are far from the heritage look and type, but boy oh boy, as with most production bred birds, they'll usually lay up a storm their first few years. Enjoy them. If they are healthy and happy, that's good enough. If one day you want to try some true bred birds, you'll have to have conversations with known, reputable breeders of the birds you choose. Such birds are not common and one has to often get on a waiting list for the very limited number of such birds hatched each year, nation wide.
