I was reading another post and a few people said that their Red Island Reds were attacking them. I am thinking about getting them along with a few other chickens for just some backyard fun and eggs. I have never had chickens before. I have 2 small children and this worries me. In the catalog that I was thinking of ordering them from it says that the hens are docile but the males can be aggressive. So does this mean that I should be ok since I am getting hens or should I consider something else?

You should be fine. The aggressive strain isn't in all RIRs, and it is evident in the roosters.

I have several RIR hens and a couple RIR roosters from McMurray Hatchery, and NEVER have any problems with them attacking anyone. RIR hens should be fine. If you wanted to be really cautious, Buff Orpingtons are a very docile breed.

I have both hatchery stock RIR's and breeder Reds. The breeder Reds have outstanding personalities. Right now I have 2 RIR roosters (George and Joe) that are 25 weeks old, from a breeder and they are the sweetest roos in the world. If I pick them up to give them a scratch, they don't want to get down. I personally don't believe it is the breed, but the breeding. My hatchery Red hens are great layers but a little flighty, but the only time they give me any trouble is when I check for eggs if they are on the nest. They can get a little peckish. My breeder Reds are calm and sweet, and I have a zillion more breeder Reds in my incubators right now. I love the breed and say again, I think personality comes from breeding.
