I've read where a chicken laying an egg w/ no shell is no real cause for concern. However, our 1 1/2 year old Rhode Island Red has been secluding herself from the rest of the flock (a 1 1/2 year old Black Australop and three 6-month old Reds). She doesn't seem to want to eat. My husband observed her having some watery bowel movements. We added these 3 new younger hens about a month ago and our big Red established the pecking order with them. She's the boss. But she has not laid an egg since yesterday. She didn't want to eat any grass or food today. She's seperated herself from everyone else and just laid in the corner of the fence. About 3 hours later, my husband was outside and heard a strange noise from the coop. Big Red was in there above a puddle of eggwhite and yolk. No shell! Should we seclude her from the rest of the hens and should we throw out the eggs she's produced for us these past few days. She's not been eating the oyster shells we've put in for her. Do you suppose she's sick? We lost a Golden Comet about 9 months ago that acted similar. We didn't notice a shell-less egg with her though. Just curious on what to do with her and if anyone has any advice? Thanks
