Our Rhode Island Reds are 5 months old and are laying well but their yolks are tiny. They are half the size of our other chickens. Is this a characteristic of this breed?

Have a picture of tiny yolk next to non tiny yolk?

At 5 months, they likely have not been laying for that long. Their eggs will get larger, which will probably include the yolk. Our RIR's tend to lay a more oblong shaped egg, but it's normal size, as is the yolk.

My RIR yolks have gotten larger as the pullets mature. Their yolks (and eggs) are smaller than my LB's eggs are though. But, that us not surprising as the RIR lays more eggs in a year, than the LB does. RIR pushes the eggs thru the process faster, so smaller eggs.
