Rhode Island Red Thread!

Pics
I believe they are both hens. Mine are 18 weeks today but in this pic they were 17 weeks old. This is my roo!

At about 15 to 16 weeks you will start to see a change in their comb and waddles as they are getting ready to start laying. The face starts to get darker red, their vents will get pinker and wetter, they will start doing the squat and they will start singing the egg song.... So good luck it looks like you are starting down that road.
At least that's my opinion.
I hope that's what you wanted to hear!

Yes thank you! That was good news!

Here are my two month olds. Excuse the soggy pen. The mallards like to make a mess of it. I'm excited to know what genders I have. I absolutely love these birds. They are hearty eaters, very heat tolerant, calm, and beautiful to look at. I took some close ups of faces, but I personally cannot tell yet. Do their comb and wattles develop more prominently than other breeds? Most look like cockerels to my untrained eye.

^The one in the middle looks like a pullet, and the one to the right looks very much like a cockerel.

The rest seem to have large wattle development

Having trouble sexing my new chicks- any ideas? They are around 11 weeks old and I still can't spot the roos. Any help for the newbie appreciated. (Yes I cross posted into breed/gender too)
Also, when should I expect them to start laying? 20 weeks? When should I change their feed to layer?

Barbeque Chicken

Stew Chicken- Pos. this one is a roo as he has green feathers coming in.

Parmesan Chicken

Rosemary Chicken

I am not seeing many cockerels. In another week, the cockerels will really redden up. Their combs will begin to show red and red wattles will appear under their beaks. The pullets won't show much of any red until later, more around 12 weeks and sometimes even later.

The cockerels give themselves away with their early redness in comb and wattles. Your chicks look very healthy and you've done a good job with them.

I agree totally. A lot of times they give themselves away before they feather out. They more than likely will have white down on them.

Here is my Roo at 4 week and then again just a little over 2 months, like 14 weeks....

You can clearly see the comb getting red and the waddles getting red. This was taken on March 31 and they were born on March 3

this was taken on May 14th

In a post above this you can see him as for a week ago, he is really pretty to me. LOL
I hope this helps

Oh I see. I was associating any comb/wattle growth at all with gender, but there has to be reddening for it to be affective. And thank you, I appreciate it. I'm trying to do right by them and give them all the opportunity to reach their potential. I don't want to give myself any excuses.

Edit: this is what I get for posting on my phone! I got my RIR threads mixed up. Lol

Hi RIRers! I'm joining this thread because I'm expecting 2 fertile eggs from Meyer in a few days. I'm PRAYING they arrive in good condition, and that I am able to hatch them. I've never attempted a hatch before...
