My Rhode Island Reds just layed their first eggs. I have a few questions

- Is there a specific way i need to clean them in order to make sure they are good to eat?

- If the eggs are not the round shape I am use to i.e. kinda long or super small are they ok to eat?

- Two of my eggs had two yolks in them. Is this fairly common?

Thanks for the help!

Congrats on the first eggs! To answer your questions, eggs doesn't have to be cleaned, unless they are covered in something yuk and you'd prefer to remove it before cooking the egg. There is an article on cleaning and storing fresh eggs here with more info: Cleaning and storing fresh eggs

The first eggs from new layers are often a bit odd shaped and sized. It's perfectly normal and the eggs are fine to eat. The hens usually lay a few odd ones while their bodies get the hang of producing "normal" eggs on a regular basis and these oddities are just practice runs.

Double yolkers are fairly common with new layers. Enjoy the extras!
