I have some old rice I'm about to throw out. I thought I might give it to the chickens if they can eat it raw. I don't see why not, corn & milo are raw. But I thought I saw something about folks using cooked rice. Is raw ok?
Rice, when cooked, swells up. So if a bird eats it raw it will do the same thing. At least so I'm told. That's why folks cook it before giving it to the birds.
That's also why rice is no longer thrown at weddings, too many wild birds were dieing from eating it raw.
Uncooked rice is a myth about what it can do to birds. Here is a link to the myth being false on snopes http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/birdrice.asp We people here on this board treat our birds more humanly like they are our children.
When I cook rice there's always some stuck to the bottom of the cooker, so I put it outside for the chickens and they peck it clean for me! It's brown or basmatti, so I feel like I'm giving them actual food.
