I thought I'd dust off an old chestnut.

Three men came to a flea-bag hotel asking for a room. The hotel was full up but the manager said they could have the last room but they'd have to share. It would be $30.00. Each of the men pitched in $10.00 and the bellhop showed them to the room.

The manager began feeling guilty. The room was only worth $25.00 so when the bellhop came back, he took out five one dollar bills and said "Here, take this and give it back to those guys and tell them I overcharged them.

On his way there the bellhop figures that they don't know how much the manager gave them back so he decides to keep two dollars for his trouble. He gives the men three dollars and they each take one. Now they have each paid $9.00 for the room. But....

9+9+9 is 27.......plus the 2 that the bellboy kept is 29............

Where is the extra dollar?

The guys paid $27 for the room, but the manager only has $25. $25 + the bellboy's $2 + the guys' $3 = $30. The other $1 isn't missing. The original math is faulty.

The men got it.

When the bellboy took out $2 from $30, that left the men to "owe" $28, which means $9.33 each. Their change should have been $0.67 each, but the bellboy gave them the full dollar back.
