My rooster has come at me a couple of times so I've given him a good boot but a couple of hours ago he came after my 4 year old daughter when she was petting one of the cicks and he drew blood on her. I killed him right then. My wife was upset but I told her it had to be done. I made the right choice I assume. Anyone think I coup have done something different?

Rule number 1 at my house... You hurt my children your day gets real bad... I dont fault you for it at all.. Tho the rooster was technically doing his job.. He didnt attack for fun, he saw her as a threat and tried to save the chick, just as you saved your child by attacking him back

That being said, we have had minor success with holding our buff brahma roo upside down... I say minor because it only works on the person he just attacked apparently... He attacked me first, i booted him and he just waited and tried again... He did it again and my women grabbed him up and held him upside down until he calmed down and then cradled him upside down for a while... He never attacked me again.. Minor success.. Minor because the process has to be repeated with every new person that comes around... New person comes, he attacks, gets held upside down, that person is now free to come and go... At least thats how my roo seems to be handling it... Figure its just easier to put a beware of rooster sign at the end of the driveway

Oh and to add she was upset that I told our girls to ho inside cause I had to kill him because he attacked one of the other girls. She thought I didn't need to kill a pet. I don't know if that changes anything

Yea. I do see that and that's what I told them. He did do his job, but he has come close a couple times. They know to watch out for him but he came from the pen right to her before I could even get next to her. The girls were fine with him being removed and are even excited to eat him! Lol.

Mean dog, mean roo... I wouldn't let anything attack my kids.
You did right, jkm.
I would buy the missus flowers, though...

I am the wife in our household, and I would have been right with you in killing an animal that drew blood on my child. Kids are resilient, and probably are relieved to not have to worry about getting attacked when they go out to the chickens. I also think it's good for kids to face the reality of where their food comes from, and get used to the idea that mean animals need to go away. Mean animals are not "pets" in my opinion.

I absolutely agree you did the right thing. I took too much abuse before making the same decision...of course I have no little children around or there would have been no waiting. Roosters don't have to be mean; I have one that does not attack.
