Ringneck Pheasants

Ringneck pheasants in my opinion are an interesting bird and I would like to keep some in with my hens when I get them. How many eggs do they lay a year and do they go broody? I would like to hatch my own. I presume they need their wings clipped and game bird pellets.

I would check with your DNR on any laws around keeping game birds/wildlife.

Hope your not going to introduce a male ring necked pheasant to a 'chicken hen'?
Typically, a ring necked hen will lay anywhere from 25 to 45 eggs per season. They may or may not go broody, depends on alot of factors! Do not clip their wings, that is the only source of escape other than running from predators. Also, you can not 'free range' pheasants.....well, maybe once! after that they will be gone, never to be seen again.

I have a suspicion my hens were galavanting with a male Pheasant one year. I noticed they were moseying on back by the brush where they were, and I was seeing less eggs. I found a few eggs that had blood spots in them too. The kicker was when the male Ringneck crashed through my livingroom window.

Incredible bird. He arrived just before thankgiving, but I was in the middle of work so I let him go.

If by Girls you mean chickens, don’t do it. In general, chicken hens shouldn’t be in with males of other bird species (ducks, turkeys etc) because they are not built the same way. You might be able to keep females with them.

Yes I mean chickens. I understand and won't do it. It would be interesting though to see the hybrid

I was just going to keep a pair of pheasants in the same barn as my hens

I wouldn’t think the offspring would be viable, although there is a thread on BYC regarding a chicken-Guinea hybrid.

Usually, the hens are sterile but occasionally the males might be somewhat fertile!....but not always...either way it's a 'dead end' situation.
