Rio Grande Valley - Texas... anybody?

Woo hoo, finally a forum that has 'locals'. Moved to Harlingen in 2011 and then recently to Mission this past summer. Finally have a yard and can raise chickens. Thank you for posting the info above, it will come in handy as we embark upon our adventure.

Are there any stores in the RGV that sell organic chicken feed or perhaps a place to buy ingredients to mix my own organic feed. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't think there any places that sell organic feed, but I know one of your best bets will probably be Karl's Korner in Donna. If you want to mix your own feed, you will probably have to go through HEB or try Sprouts in McAllen. I know that Sprouts used to be Sun Harvest and SH used to have loads of bulk seeds. Unfortunately, when you buy from grocery stores, you end up paying loads of money.

If you have the space and the green thumb, I'd recommend growing your own chicken feed. There are homesteading books that have chicken feed recipes. I actually ordered a non-GMO sees catalog and there are loads of grains you can grow for your birds. Then, when you harvest, you can also save some seeds and use them for the next year. It's an investment of time, money and manual labor, but you will know for sure where the feed comes from because you will be the source!

I'm working on my garden plot currently to see if I can grow some basic items (including oats, corn and sorghum) for my chooks and other food for my human family. The work is tedious (and I have to weed the entire area by hand so it'll be an organic garden, so hands are crazy sore) but I like to think my flock will appreciate the effort when they love their new feed. :D

Sorry to keep reviving old threads here, but I'm desperately looking for some people in Weslaco to team up with, especially people interested in talking to the city.

I'm in Weslaco and trying to start raising a few chickens. Is there anyone selling different breeds around here?

New to the chicken scene. Ordered some bantams, some rhode island reds and buff orpingtons. Have about 25 chicks coming in a couple of weeks, but no way am I keeping all of them. Well probably give away or sell some for a very cheap price. I'm from Edcouch by the way.
