I bought Speckles ( a speckled sussex pullet) at the feed store about 8 weeks ago. I recently added the teenagers into the big coop and they were doing great. Little Speckles would follow my every step, perch on my feet, and beg for me to hold her. She was so special. She had curled toes (I hadn't noticed when I bought her.) She hopped all over the yard and seemed to love life so much. She was such a joy.

Last night when we put them all into their run/coop it was such a crowd I didn't notice she was missing. I found her drowned in our dogs water bowl this morning.

I am so filled with sorrow over the loss of this incredibly sweet little bird.

I'm so sorry you lost her

I was just about to post a RIP for my little Rhode Island Red Pullet who I found yesterday morning crammed into a small space in the henhouse :( We just started raising our own chicks (since 3 days old). Princess was the head of the flock, the only hen my son loved to hold and whisper too. She is the chick pictured in my avatar. I was and still am feeling guilty for not closing that gap up. My husband told me that the girls would all gather in that section after going in at night and pile up on one another but then come out. I didn't think one would die:( I only have 5 pullets. Now we have 4:( Saturday I swear the other hens were looking for her! In and out of the hen house all morning! I felt terrible. My son was also very upset. We're thinking of getting 2 new chicks, but now I have to research and learn about introducing new chicks to a flock.
BTW.. I am going to call the coop builder and suggest that they fix their construction of their nesting boxes in their coop so this doesn't happen to someone else. Speaking of.. I wonder if there is a review portion on this site for Coops? hmmmm...
