Some of you may remember my posts about my poor little chicken with the crop issues. She had what appeared to be an impacted crop when she was about 1 month old, then a recurrence of sour/impacted crop recently. I had her in my house in a Rubbermaid bin and was doing all of the standard "sour crop" treatment stuff. Olive Oil, probiotics, vinegar water, soft food, etc. Food would just sit in her crop and not go down for hours and hours, and eventually start rotting.

I believe she had what is called pendulous crop, as her crop really hung down LOW. In order to squish any food "down" her, we almost had to squish it "up" first. This condition made her basically unsurvivable in the long-term, as we could not keep her isolated for her whole life and only soft foods, etc. She was miserable. I decided to cull her and put her out of her misery, but God took care of her for me while I was on my business trip. She passed away last Wednesday, July 1, about 2 hours before my plane landed.

My husband took her out to see her buddies at the coop about an hour before she went to sleep. She just wanted to sleep. Her buddies said goodbye. I will miss her - she was a sweet little hen.

Thanks to BYC forum for all of your support and advice with her.

On a side note, I had ANOTHER chicken with a full/squishy crop first thing in the morning. I brought her in, expelled the nasty rotting stuff, gave vinegar water, and she's fine now. Guess God was preparing me to be the sour crop expert in my area!

This isn't really a reply, but a new post. I discovered my white plymouth, dead in our chicken yard. We have a coop on top of a secure pen (that we open during the day--into a fenced "chicken run". Their yard is about 1/3 of our 1/2 acre backyard, and there are (were)8 hens.

I remove the poop every morning, and dust with DE.

She was setting this morning when I left for work. All other girls look fine. The White (Winnie) seemed normal over the past few days. She did seem to "lose her voice" in the last 3 days. I didn't think much about it because her voice has always been softer and higher--we called her whiny winnier.

Anyway, is there disease afoot? She died in the girls' dust holes they make.

Help. She was my fav, but I don't want to lose more.
