Sadly, we found our beloved rooster Harvey dead in his run this morning, he was only 3 years old.
He probably died of a heart attack as there was no signs of injury or ill health beforehand.
Harvey was special to us because:
he was the only hatching chick out of 12 eggs
his mother tossed him around when he was little
he was a male which we didn't plan on keeping
he survived, when young, a dislocated shoulder (at least we think it was)
and after which he kept on limping for years
he fathered a total of 15 chickens
he was very calm and kind to us and the hens
he made this funny noise when he spotted our cat (his best pal)
he may even have grandchildren (grandchicks) by now as one of his sons was given to another farmer
and his youngest son, Wubbo, lives with us and is eager to take over the reigns. Only he is not fully grown yet and the hens are having none of it.
He was a beautiful boy.
Harvey: we'll miss your calm demeanor and funny noises
